Is English a difficult language to learn?

Is English a difficult language to learn? Why or why not?

  1. Learning a new language is a long-term process. It is the reason why people unable to master a new language as they spend more time than another subjects to master. Apart from that, several problems such as pronunciation, the number of vocabulary, and how to put them on a sheet of paper meaningfully can be found as the barriers.

Particularly for English, as a second language learner, I nearly find that English is not difficult in the alphabetical aspect as Bahasa uses the same symbols as alphabets. However, the number of vocabularies and how to use them on four language skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening)correctly are still challenging and inaccuracies often occur in some certain topics.

Finally, I feel that English is a difficult language to learn, yet personally the hardship to master it creates a curiosity for me to master this language as a media of communication to learn the other knowledges in this world.

  2. Personally, for some aspects, Enlish is difficult to learn. I find the structure is different from my native langguage. In my language, people can say the word without thinking the word order, the tenses, and the idiom. People only need to know the vocabulary and just say it and people will understand what he/she mean.
I also find the words and the pronunciation of English langguage is not only difficult to say but also hard to understand. I know a lot of vocabulary but when I read an article, it's hard for me to comprehend it. Moreover, when I speak to someone, and she/he doesn't understand what I am talking about, and keep saying, sorry, or I beg your pardon, it would just make me felt lack of confident and forget what I want to say.

In my opinion some aspects of English are difficult to learn. Vocabulary and idioms are the most difficult ones. We need to know the meaning of English words in context because some English words will have more than one meaning. Learning the vocabulary is not enough, we need to know how the words are pronounced. When I began to learn English, I learned many vocabulary in English books. However I pronounced them wrongly and sometimes when a foreigner talked to me I didnt understand. But when I asked them to write in a piece of paper, I knew all the worlds exactly. There are also some idioms in English that confuse English learners. The idioms contain two or more English words put together that have totally different meaning compared if they stand word by word. The only way to be able to understand and comprehend the idiom is by reading more English books.

  4. In my opinion, English is not difficult to learn since it has become as the international language. Many learners can find many sources of the language easily such as grammar books, English textual material and so on. Moreover, almost all parts of the world the people are speaking English, therefore, learners can practice anytime to all skills in English. For instance, they can practice their writing by sending email, or they can also practice speaking and listening by using skype to talk to people in other countries. What is more, English is used every where; advertisement, brochures, newspapers.Surprisingly all of that are not only found in big cities but also in very remote areas. So people can learn English anytime and anywhere.

  5. I find English is not easy to learn especially when it comes to grammar. There are some differences of grammar rule between English and Bahasa Indonesia, which make me confuse sometimes. In Indonesian language, we do not have specific pronoun for male and female as in English. For the third person, we only use the word 'dia' or 'ia'. Therefore when I practice my English, I often mix between the word 'she' and 'he'.

Another difference is the tenses. In English, we have to change the verb form based on the time (whether is past, present, or future) whereas in Indonesian language we just have to mention the time in the beginning or the end of the sentence without change the verb form.

Thus, eventhough I know about the grammar of English, I cannot apply it appropriately sometimes during my speaking or writing.

  6. In my opinion, English is not easy to learn because there are certain aspects that make it difficult such as grammatical structure, phonology, and vocabulary. Another point that makes English difficult is because the role of English in every country is not the same. Indonesia, English is a foreign language. It is only taught at schools, therefore, most people do not use English in daily communication. It is different from Malaysia where English is widely spoken by many people as English is as second language beside National Language "Melayu".

  7. For me, I find some difficulties to learn English because this language is not familiar and I do not use it as a daily language. I learn English for many years but only focus on grammmar exactly.
Firstly, it is very hard to apply English in daily speaking eventhough I understand what people say but it is a little bit hard to reply it. I know that I need practice a lot.
Next, in reading skills, sometimes it is difficult to comprehend the text because I lack in vocabulary. Furthermore, English word meaning is depend on context, hence it is also one big problem.
The last one, I find difficult to arrange the sentences and paragraphs. not people who read my writing, sometimes I personally also get confious to read my writing itself.
However, I love English, I wish I could master all aspects of this language like a native speaker.

  8. personally, I think English is a difficult language to learn because it is different from my mother tongue. eventhough I have studied it for a long time, but I still have many problem when I speak in English. Furthermore, when my teachers taught me English, they only focus to teach on grammar and memorize the vocabulary. as a result, it is difficult for me to apply it in daily conversation or in writing. for example, when someone ask question to me and I can understand him, however the problem is hard for me to express my answer for him.

  9. I think English is an easy languange to learn. Because there are many sources for us to learn from. For example Every governments put it into their educational curriculum. So students can learn English since they are in the elementary school. Furthermore, we also can find many organisations or course places who provide English course. And because English is an international languange, it is easy to find books in English and many programmes on TV also in English. We also can sosialized with people who speak English such as involve in tourism activity and practise our new languange with the tourists. However, I cannot deny that it is difficult in the beginning to study this language. So we have to focus and have strong motivation to face the difficulties and never give up. For example, We know that we cannot compete with others to get a good job in this globalisation Era If we cannot speak the international language.

  10. Based on my experience English is difficult to learn in some aspects. The grammar is almost totally different compared to my language system.
Above of all I would like to share the difficult in another side that is from psychology side.
We afraid to communicate in English eventhough we know the grammar and many vocabularies.
English is foreign language for us so we have an assumption that it must be tough to learn. We never can't be a perfect user.We are lack of confident.
This notion makes us like face a wall then hard to develop our ability.

  11. In my openion, English is a little difficult compared to the Bahasa. Because English have many kind of tenses and pronouns, it is difference to Bahasa that has only three tenses and the same pronoun for man or woman, besids that, one word has a lot of menings depending on situation of sentences. So we have to learn it more carefull.

  13. In my opinion, English is not as difficult as other languages to learn. English learners only have to learn grammar and vocabulary to master it. Compared to other languages, Arabic, for example, people have to learn many aspects of it such as Nahwu, Sharf, Balaghah, and its vocabulary. However, those who want to study English have to practice it in order to make it excellent.
The learners will never use English well unless they use it in their daily life because their mother tongue might influence his English. The use of vocabulary that almost the same in the first language might be used in different circumstances in English. For example, use: menggunakan or memakai (in Bahasa) can't be used for "using clothes", but it can be used for "memakai pakaian: wearing clothes".
all in all, actually English is an easy language to lear but it needs more practice. to make it perfect.

  14. I find English is not very difficult but in some aspects such as applying new words in sentence need much time. The short word is more difficult than the long word. I come from mother tongue Bahasa Indonesia with different sentence structure from English. It is difficult to write the correct English sentence structure. Sometime when I write, it sounds Indonesian structure. In speaking, I can not apply English everyday because it is very limited people who can speak English in my country. As a result when I speak I often speak wrong speech. If I want to speak past form sentence, unconsciously I speak simple present form even I know my mistake but it is unavoidable. I believe that if I can practice English everyday it could be better. It would help me to be familiar with all aspects in English.

  15. Generally, the process of learning a language depends on some factors such as the length of the time to study it, ages, places and the background of mother tongue.
For me as an Indonesian, personally, I think English is not easy to learn because there are so many differences in most aspects from my mother tongue, for example grammar, structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
However, for some people who have similiar language rule of mother tongue from English, for instance Europeans, it would be easier to cope.
Overall, I may say that actually it depends on who is learning English.
