Some Students are Slow Learners. Why is this?

Some Students are Slow Learners. Why is this? What can be done to help them?

  1. Every student has their own difficulties in study. Some students cannot catch lessons as fast as their friends.
This happens because they do not have strong motivation in school. The quality of parents’ attention to their lessons is also a factor. The less parents are involved, the less their child comprehends the lessons.
The first solution is offering incentives that are appropriate to be their motivations. The next is parents must be willing to know what happens at school and help their homework. Nutrition is play important role in mind building. Giving proper nutrition to their children is a must. And parents’ active action on this issue is crucial. A child needs to have a breakfast. Many researches proved that a quality breakfast and proper sleep are the two best ways to improve student performance. Giving them extra time to complete their tasks is also important to help them.

  2. Some students have special conditions. It comes naturally since they born or could be caused medical or accident reason. It makes it more difficult for them to learn than normal students.

But, this is not the end of the world. The right teaching method will help them to study as normal as others. A good method can be useless without a good deliverer.
Here, a qulified teacher or instructor has an ultimate role. They must have basic knowledge how to deal with this kind of learners. They should be more patient to face them, for instance.

The slow learners needs special treatment. Therefore, the way to convey the lesson should be designed more specific for them. It must be adjusted with thier ability.
Do something that they like and comfortable to do. You know, the special kids like this sometimes hard to interact with new people or situation.
Using medium like pictures, puzzles or music can be very useful. Asking them to play games are also a good way to have thier attention.Once they like you, the rest of process will be easier. Even there are slow learners who achieve better result than normal one.

So there is nothing impossible to be done. High dedication and commitment are demanded to bring them into the brighter world.

  3. Some say that slow learners are caused by genetics while others say that it is caused by lack of confidence or. Perhaps the greatest challenge to an educator is to teach a child who is a slow learner. However, the teachers must be careful to categorize the characteristics of slow learners.

Typically, a slow learner has difficulty with higher order thinking or reasoning skills. It suggests that it will be more challenging to learn new concepts. New skills need to be based on mastering the concepts. This can be difficult when the majority of the class has already mastered a concept, while the slow learner needs more time. This can be gaps in knowledge and basic skills.

It is also important to recognize that these students also have lack of self confidence. They may be quick to give up. They often feel "stupid" and start hating school. They spend all day doing something that is difficult for them.

The teachers always have to make some concessions such as reducing distractions, and allow more breaks. Finding the activities that the student can be successful in is very important. There should be emphasis on strengths as well. The assignments must be shorter and with more variation and there must be more hands-on work. The teachers can assess their work by short tests, oral testing, redoing tests and short feedback times. The most important thing is not to make students compete. The other strategy that can be done is to encourage them by grouping them with a patient learner.

In conclusion, many teaching strategies are available to deal with the issue of slow learners. Therefore, teachers need special technique and strategy to instruct the slow learners. They can customize the testing by knowing the students problem.

Small and large fruit in the same tree is a good example for students with their variety of thought. Is this a problem? A teacher can find different levels of capability for each student. Some can understand the lesson easily. Others need longer times to understand the lesson. Teachers take a main role of learning process in the classroom and should aware to this issue. A successful teacher is a teacher who can see all of his students differences as a special uniqueness. It is such a fantastic moment to see the weaker students can finally overcome learning barriers.

Teachers should have been facilitated by many methodology of teaching in order to provide the best assistance to every student. Each student will have different subject and skill where they good at. Students cleverness is not only seen in cognitive point of view but also affective and psycho motor.
Teachers can still teach weaker students in many interesting ways by producing more games to psycho motor students. They will all succeed as long as the teachers give them motivation, more attention and give them positive attitude.

  5. TEACHING SLOW LEARNERS

It is true that, it would be very challenging for teachers to teach students with low ability. Even for normal pupils, teachers still need to have the best approach in teaching. It needs patience, understanding, and humour.

The main problem that I have discovered is teachers have insufficient psychological knowledge to work with these special learners. This condition may cause some drawbacks both in class activities or students achievement. This kind of learner will need special treatment from their instructors, getting more attention and motivation for instance. However, few teachers can do this for their slower students.

Isn’t it good to make this problem as the main agenda for education department to find the best solution? Therefore, this department can start thinking about providing some training for teachers, seminars with the experts. I strongly believe that by doing this, it will be very useful for all, the learners, teachers and educational institutions.

‘Where there is a will there is a way’ is a good phrase to motivate teachers for not giving up when teaching kids with special needs, because they also deserve to get the best education.
